Microneedling, also known as Percutaneous Collagen Induction (PCI) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical and non-ablative technology used to treat numerous skin conditions. The micro-wounds created during microneedling initiate the release of growth factors, triggering collagen and elastin formation in the dermis.
- Acne scars
- Stretch marks
- Facial rejuvenation for improvement in texture, fine wrinkles and laxity
- Pigmentation including Melasma
Although some results are seen after one treatment, a series of 3 treatments is recommended for full benefit. Continued improvement is seen for up to 6 months after the last treatment.
Although home dermarollers are available, the pressure that has to be done with rolling can be inconsistent, they are difficult to use for small areas such as scars, they become dull over time and can cause pigmentation and scarring if used incorrectly.
At Skin Focus, we use an electric pen containing numerous microneedles for one time use. The depth of penetration can be adjusted and therefore affect different concerns on the skin.
Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the skin so the procedure can be done with minimal discomfort.
After microneedling there may be a sunburn-like discomfort with some redness and swelling that resolves in 48 hours.
Microneedling can also be used to augment transdermal drug delivery through pores created in the skin.
Growth factors, Hyaluronic acid and Platelet Rich Plasma among other things may be applied to the skin during and after microneedling to treat specific conditions of the skin.
