Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a specialized treatment targeted at correcting the root cause of chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain. It will help the body regenerate injured tissues by creating a highly targeted stimulus to engage the body’s natural repair mechanisms.

Prolotherapy uses a thin needle to inject a solution, typically, of local anesthetic and dextrose directly into the source of the injured tissues. Other solutions such as sodium morrhuate, vitamins B or C, and sterile water may be used depending on the injured tissue. This stimulates a very localized, controlled inflammatory response, initiating the healing process and regeneration of damaged tissue. The agent is typically used with a local anesthetic (lidocaine or procaine).

What to expect from your treatment

With the help of a long, thin needle we will deliver the irritant solution to several different points around the target area in the back or joint. The number of injections used depends on the area or joint affected.

target areas

Appointment Time

Depending on the number of areas being treated, most procedures will be completed in 15 to 30 minutes.

Downtime

There is no downtime, you can continue with your day as normal. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and stiffness, but this should subside as your body begins to heal itself.

Aftercare

Because the prolotherapy calls on blood and stem cells to flood the joint, expect some swelling that lasts up to one week. Avoid stressing the joint or you may cause the treatment to be ineffective. Let the blood and stems cells carry out their good work. Do not apply ice.

Products used

Sugar (dextrose or glucose), Platelet Rich Plasma, Ozone

FAQ

This injection therapy works best in injured areas with poor blood flow like ligaments, tendons, and cartilage – as such, many sprains, tears, ruptures — even arthritis responds well.

Depending on the extent of the injury and the structures involved, treatment can typically require between three to ten sessions spaced approximately a month apart.

Prolotherapy is a mixture of dextrose (sugar) and procaine (a non-toxic anaesthetic) that provides enough inflammation at a site of injury to promote the body’s natural healing response.

If your injury is chronic & recurrent, Your injury is severe (i.e. prominent rupture), You have had multiple injuries in several locations.

before your appointment

If you are taking anti-inflammatory medications it would be best to stop taking them 2-7 days prior to your first visit. They interfere with the healing process with Prolotherapy.
